Best baby cry analyzer apps: 10 apps, one honest comparison

The best baby cry analyzer apps all make the same promise: record a few seconds, wait, learn why. This page puts ten apps from the App Store and Google Play side by side: what each one does, what it claims, where your recording goes, what stays free, and what the ratings say. One thing first: one of these apps, Agubu, is ours. We say so at the top so you keep it in mind, and we apply the same criteria to our own app as to the rest.

Let us also be upfront about the science. No app can reliably read the reason for a cry from the sound alone; a 2023 study in Communications Psychology says so, and so does our own measurement. So we did not ask which app knows best. We asked what each one promises and what stands behind the promise. All app data comes from the store listings as read on 29 September 2026.

Disclosure: we make Agubu. Every fact about a competitor is sourced; ratings come from store data and change over time.

How we compared

We read every app against the same seven criteria. The order is not a quality grade; it is a reading order that weights the honesty of the claims and where the recording goes.

A caveat on ratings

Google Play counts are rounded approximations shown by the store. In the Turkish App Store most of these apps have a few dozen ratings, sometimes three or four, and numbers that small say nothing. Agubu has no ratings yet at all; it was released on 31 August 2026. Read ratings as context, not as a ranking.

Agubu

Agubu is our app: cry analysis, care log and soothing sounds by an independent developer in Turkey, for iPhone (iOS 15.0 or later) and Android. The microphone listens for 8 seconds; an on-device model checks the sound is really a cry and rejects silent or noisy clips. Reasons are ranked from context, not sound: last feed, time awake, last diaper, age, time of day. When unsure, it says so.

Standout: audio never touches the disk and is deleted after analysis; no account, server, ads or analytics. Free tier, permanent: 3 analyses a day, unlimited logging, 8 sounds, 7 days of history. Limitations: brand new, no ratings; no multi-baby profiles or caregiver sharing. Best for parents who want the recording to stay on the phone and an honest list of possibilities. No percentage claim, by design; see Methodology.

ChatterBaby

ChatterBaby is a free app from UCLA Health's research group, on iOS and Android since 2018. It records a short clip, compares it with UCLA's cry database and names the most likely of three reasons: hungry, fussy or pain. Standout: no in-app purchases on either store, and a candid listing: “if the ChatterBaby algorithm and your own common sense disagree, always trust your brain”.

Limitations: recordings are stored on a research server under a consent form, so analysis is not on-device; English only; no tracking or sounds; Google Play 3.0 (about 1,590), US App Store 3.94 (1,385). Best for parents who want a free, research-origin app and accept contributing recordings to a university study. The developer's claim: “roughly 85% of pain cries”, “roughly 90% accurate for catching any baby cries” (App Store description).

Cry Analyzer (First Ascent)

Cry Analyzer comes from First Ascent in Japan, on iOS and Android with 16 languages including Turkish. From a 5-second sample it shows percentages for states such as sleep, milk or discomfort; feedback personalises it and it keeps a simple log. Standout: the most widely used app here, 5M+ Play downloads; the developer states research with Japan's National Center for Child Health and Development.

Limitations: ad-supported free tier, ad-free use needs a subscription; purchases of $2.99 to $11.99 were listed at the time of checking. Only 5 seconds of audio, no context. Google Play 3.0 (about 4,960), Turkish App Store 3.47 (30). Best for parents who want the most widely used, multilingual app and accept ads or a subscription. The developer's claim: “The accuracy of this APP is over 80%” (App Store description).

Nanni AI

Nanni AI is Ubenwa's app for iOS, Android and Apple Watch. It returns the most likely reason from a few seconds of audio, plus soothing tips, and bundles SleepGenie nap prediction, a sleep, feed and diaper tracker and a CDC-based milestone log. Standout: the developer cites years of clinical cry studies with pediatric hospitals; the highest US App Store rating among the research-backed apps, 4.70 (339).

Limitations: Google Play 3.6 (about 1,170), only 3 ratings in Turkey; English only; the listing says your use drives Ubenwa's research; no categories or percentage published; the iOS app was last updated on 30 June 2025. Purchases from $9.99 to $119.99 were listed at the time of checking. Best for an all-in-one tracker with Apple Watch. The developer's claim: no percentage; “backed by in-depth scientific research” (nanni.ai).

Cry Translator Baby Assistant (AYA)

Cry Translator Baby Assistant in the US, AYA Cry Analyzer AI Assistant in Turkey: this Digital Enter app runs on iOS and Android in 48 languages including Turkish. From 5 seconds of audio it shows hunger, sleepiness, discomfort or need for attention as percentages, plus AI chat, sounds, a feeding and diaper tracker. Standout: the best ratings among analyzers with meaningful volume, US App Store 4.73 (612), Google Play 4.4 (about 3,730).

Limitations: recordings are processed on the developer's side, not on the device; ads on Android; many weekly plans, $5.99 to $8.99 a week at the time of checking; listed under Medical though the description disclaims medical use. Best for a highly rated, multilingual all-in-one, if cloud processing is acceptable. The developer's claim: “Up to 96.36%”, with a footnote that the figure comes from internal tests (cryanalyzer.com).

AI Baby Cry Analyzer (Gowalk)

AI Baby Cry Analyzer by Gowalk is iOS only. It records 3 to 12 seconds, asks whether to upload the clip, and suggests everyday reasons such as hunger, tiredness or discomfort with a plain-language likelihood. Most of the app is a full journal: feeds, sleep, diapers, pumping, medicine, growth, with caregiver sharing, PDF/CSV/JSON export and offline sounds. Standout: careful wording; results are “uncertain possibilities, not measured probabilities”; uploads need consent, analytics are off by default.

Limitations: analysis needs internet and uploads the recording; no Android; no Turkish; the free analysis limit is not stated; subscriptions from $3.99 a week at the time of checking. US App Store 4.6 (150). Best for iPhone users who want a thorough journal with caregiver sharing and a cautiously worded cloud analysis. The developer's claim: no percentage.

Cry Analyzer: CryDecoder

CryDecoder is a new iOS-only app (iOS 17 or later) from Aurelian Syndicate; first release December 2025. From 5 to 10 seconds it returns a confidence-weighted result among hungry, tired, gassy or fussy, says it uses feeding and sleep times and learns the baby's voice over time. Standout: conceptually the closest to Agubu here, with context and confidence tiers, and an explicit “not a medical device” note.

Limitations: 5 ratings in the US store and none in Turkey, too new to judge; no Android; the product domain did not resolve at the time of checking; the category list differs between the store and the developer site; a weekly subscription of $2.99 was listed. Best for early adopters who want a light app with context. The developer's claim: “high accuracy”, no figure (App Store description).

Babie

Babie by HaS Soft is on iOS and Android. It combines a cry analyzer that names hunger, tired, pain, discomfort or gas with sleep sounds, a feeding, sleep and diaper tracker, growth percentiles, milestones and an AI parenting chat. Standout: all-in-one at a comparatively low price at the time of checking ($3.99 a week, $29.99 a year); partner sharing and log export.

Limitations: almost no ratings, zero in the US store, one in Turkey, none shown on Google Play, with 1K+ downloads; the Play listing says it “tells you exactly why your baby is crying” without tying that to any method; English only on iOS; on-device or cloud processing is not stated. Best for early adopters who want a cheap all-in-one; unproven so far. The developer's claim: no percentage; “exactly why”, with no source.

BabyLingo

BabyLingo by KolekciApps is on iOS and Android in 8 languages including Turkish, and has more ratings in the Turkish App Store (95) than in the US (55). From 5 to 10 seconds it shows the most likely reason among hunger, tired, gas or discomfort with soothing tips, plus rain, ocean, white noise and lullabies. Standout: a simple three-step flow and regular updates.

Limitations: the developer itself calls it “a parenting and entertainment support tool” and the App Store category is Entertainment; no method or figure is given; the weekly plan is comparatively expensive, $6.59 at the time of checking; no tracking; 1K+ Play downloads and no Play rating shown. Ratings: Turkish App Store 4.12 (95), US 4.04 (55). Best for Turkish-speaking parents who want a simple app with sleep sounds. The developer's claim: no percentage.

Happy Kids

Happy Kids by Happy Digital, a Turkish developer, is a 0-5 child development app on iOS and Android, in Turkish and English. It offers age-based development information, care records and notes, AI assistants, weekly reports and a free sleep-sound player with a timer. AI cry-sound analysis arrived in version 3.0.4 in April 2026. Standout: the largest Turkish audience on this list, 4.48 (about 7,750) in the Turkish App Store and 4.8 (about 15,000) on Google Play with 500K+ downloads.

Limitations: cry analysis is a side feature and neither store listing explains how it works, what it returns or whether it is free; ads on Android; the focus is 0-5 rather than newborns; listed under Medical. Best for Turkish parents who want a broad development and care app and see cry analysis as a bonus. The developer's claim: no percentage.

Do baby cry analyzer apps actually work?

The honest answer: detecting that a baby is crying works; reading why from the sound does not. A 2023 study by Lockhart-Bouron and colleagues in Communications Psychology (Nature Portfolio) examined 39,201 cry sequences recorded in the homes of 24 babies. Across the 676 recordings with a known cause, neither adult listeners nor an algorithm could reliably tell the causes apart, while the baby's age and identity came through reliably.

Our own measurement replicated this independently. On the only public cause-labelled dataset (457 recordings from 221 babies) we asked one model three questions and split the data by baby: identity 62.5% (chance 9.1%), age 40.2% (chance 33.3%), three-class cause 32.9% (chance 33.3%). The pipeline works; the signal is not there. High percentages mostly come from the same baby sitting in both training and test data, which we also measured. Details are in why a cry cannot be read and on the Methodology page.

Which one for whom

Frequently asked questions

Which baby cry app is most accurate?

Nobody can prove it. The apps that give a figure (Cry Analyzer “over 80%”, AYA “up to 96.36%”, ChatterBaby “roughly 85%”) give it as their own statement, and we found no independent verification. When data is split by baby, cause prediction drops to chance level; the science section on this page explains why.

Are baby cry analyzer apps free?

ChatterBaby is completely free. Cry Analyzer is free with ads, ad-free with a subscription. In Agubu, 3 analyses a day, logging, 8 sounds and the last 7 days of history are free permanently; unlimited analyses need Premium. Most of the others run on weekly or monthly subscriptions, and prices vary by region.

Do baby cry analyzer apps work offline?

In Agubu, analysis, logging and sounds all work offline. ChatterBaby uploads the recording to a research server, Gowalk's app needs internet for analysis, and AYA processes recordings on its side. For Nanni AI, CryDecoder, Babie and Happy Kids the store pages do not say.

Is a baby cry analyzer app reliable?

The cry-detection part can be; the part that names a reason from the sound cannot. The 2023 study and our own measurement show the same thing: the sound carries who the baby is and how old, not why they are crying. A reason given by any app is at best a context-based guess; keep looking at your baby, not only at the screen.

Is there an app that tells you why your baby is crying?

Many promise it; none can do it from the sound alone, and that includes ours. What an app can honestly do is confirm a cry is happening and then estimate from context: how long since the last feed, how long awake, when the nappy was changed, the baby's age and the hour. An app that answers from a five-second clip alone is guessing, whatever the percentage on the screen. If you use one, treat the answer as a prompt to check the context list, not as a verdict.

Which baby cry analyzer apps keep the recording on the phone?

From the store listings as read on 29 September 2026: Agubu analyses on the device, never writes audio to disk and has no server or account. ChatterBaby stores recordings on a UCLA research server under a consent form; AYA processes recordings on its side; AI Baby Cry Analyzer (Gowalk) asks before uploading and needs internet. For Nanni AI, CryDecoder, Babie and Happy Kids the store pages do not say where the audio goes; check the privacy label on the store page before you record.

Why does a cry analyzer app give different answers for the same cry?

Because the reason is not in the sound, so the model is reacting to noise. User reviews in this category describe the same cry returning different answers, each with high confidence, and results appearing in a silent room. We reproduced that on the Methodology page: a model shipped in one commercial app changed its answer across different seconds of the same recording on more than half the clips, at an average confidence of 96.9%, and named a cause with full confidence for absolute silence. A stable answer needs stable inputs, which is why context rather than sound decides the ranking in Agubu.
