Best baby translator apps: the honest answer is that none of them translate

Every baby translator app in the store makes the same promise: to tell you what your baby is trying to say. This page puts seven apps that show up for that search side by side, but before the list, one thing in plain words: no app can translate a cry, because there is no “reason” inside the sound of a cry to translate. A 2023 study and our own measurement both show this. One of the apps on the list, Agubu, is ours, so we hold our own app to the same criteria and the same scepticism.

This page does not answer “which is best” by picking a winner. It answers by describing what each app actually does: which one is a classifier, which one is a care journal, which one is plainly entertainment. The data comes from the store listings as read on 29 September 2026; ratings were read from the iTunes Lookup API and the Google Play pages.

Disclosure: we make Agubu. Every fact about a competitor is sourced; ratings come from store data and change over time.

How we compared

We used the seven criteria from our cry analyzer comparison and added one: does an app with “translator” in its name actually analyse sound, or is the word only a search term?

Agubu

Agubu is our app. Most apps on this page carry “translator” in their name; we do not use that word, because we measured that there is nothing to translate. It listens for 8 seconds; an on-device model checks the sound is a cry. Reasons are ranked from context, not sound: last feed, time awake, last diaper, age, time of day. Three confidence tiers; when unsure, it says so.

Audio is never written to disk; no account, server or ads. Alongside: a four-type care log, wake windows, 16 soothing sounds (8 free), 10 sourced guides; iPhone (iOS 15.0 or later) and Android, Turkish and English. Limitations: new, no ratings; no multi-baby or caregiver sharing. Best for parents who want an honest ranking of what the baby may need now. No percentage claim; see Methodology.

Baby Translator & Cry Stopper

Baby Translator & Cry Stopper by Ninja Chemist is an iOS-only novelty app. Its store description says it records baby babble, takes a photo and plays back a “hilarious quote” in a voice you choose; it also offers calming sounds (“Cry Stopper”) and guided breathing for the parent. It does not try to find out why the baby is crying; the listing says “turn any baby-talk into hilarious quotes”.

Standout: a large rating count for a novelty app, 4.31 (2,065) on the US App Store. Limitations: no analysis despite the name; last updated on 13 July 2019; according to its App Store description, a weekly subscription of $4.99 (with a 3-day free trial) at the time of checking; iOS and English only; a “mild mature themes” advisory. Best for fun with friends and family, not for understanding a cry. The developer's claim: none.

Baby Translator & Cry Analyzer (Bankrot Studio)

Baby Translator & Cry Analyzer is published under Alexander Mikhaylov on the App Store and “Bankrot Studio” on Google Play, for iOS and Android. The listing says it uses “amazing AI technology” to find out why the baby is crying (hungry, sleepy, annoyance, delight) and includes white and pink noise; no sample length, method or category list is given. Standout: 500K+ Play downloads; the cheapest subscriptions here, $2.99 a week and $24.99 a year at the time of checking.

Limitations: App Store category Entertainment; Google Play 3.2 (about 1,190); the Play short description says the app “will guarantee your baby's happiness”; privacy policy and terms are bit.ly links, no website; English only. Best for: not recommended for understanding a cry; closer to entertainment. The developer's claim: none.

Nanni AI

Nanni AI is Ubenwa's app for iOS, Android and Apple Watch, the research-backed one on this list. It returns the most likely reason from a few seconds of audio, plus soothing tips, and bundles SleepGenie nap prediction, a sleep, feed and diaper tracker and a CDC-based milestone log. Standout: the developer cites years of clinical cry studies with pediatric hospitals; US App Store 4.70 (339).

Limitations: Google Play 3.6 (about 1,170), only 3 ratings in Turkey; English only; the listing says your use drives Ubenwa's research; no categories or percentage published; the iOS app was last updated on 30 June 2025; purchases from $9.99 to $119.99 were listed at the time of checking. Best for an all-in-one tracker with Apple Watch. The developer's claim: no percentage; “backed by in-depth scientific research” (nanni.ai).

Cry Translator Baby Assistant (AYA)

Cry Translator Baby Assistant in the US, AYA Cry Analyzer AI Assistant in Turkey: this Digital Enter app runs on iOS and Android in 48 languages including Turkish. From 5 seconds of audio it shows hunger, sleepiness, discomfort or need for attention as percentages, plus AI chat, sounds, a feeding and diaper tracker. Standout: US App Store 4.73 (612), Google Play 4.4 (about 3,730).

Limitations: recordings are processed on the developer's side, not on the device; ads on Android; many weekly plans, $5.99 to $8.99 a week at the time of checking; the website still says Android is “coming very soon” despite 100K+ Play downloads. Best for a highly rated, multilingual all-in-one, if cloud processing is acceptable. The developer's claim: “Up to 96.36%”, with a footnote that the figure comes from internal tests (cryanalyzer.com).

BabyLingo

BabyLingo by KolekciApps is on iOS and Android in 8 languages including Turkish, with 95 ratings in the Turkish App Store and 55 in the US. From 5 to 10 seconds it shows the most likely reason among hunger, tired, gas or discomfort with soothing tips, plus rain, ocean, white noise and lullabies. Standout: a simple three-step flow, a Turkish interface and regular updates.

Limitations: the developer itself calls it “a parenting and entertainment support tool” and the App Store category is Entertainment; no method or figure is given; the weekly plan was $6.59 at the time of checking; no tracking; 1K+ Play downloads and no Play rating shown. Ratings: Turkey 4.12 (95), US 4.04 (55). Best for Turkish-speaking parents who want a simple app with sleep sounds. The developer's claim: no percentage.

Cry Analyzer: CryDecoder

CryDecoder is a new iOS-only app (iOS 17 or later) from Aurelian Syndicate; first release December 2025. From 5 to 10 seconds it returns a confidence-weighted result among hungry, tired, gassy or fussy and says it takes feeding and sleep times into account. Standout: an approach built on context and confidence tiers, and an explicit “not a medical device” note.

Limitations: 5 ratings in the US and none in Turkey; no Android; the product domain did not resolve at the time of checking; the category list differs between the store and the developer site; a weekly subscription of $2.99 was listed. Best for iPhone users who want to try a light app with context early. The developer's claim: “high accuracy”, no figure (App Store description).

Do baby translator apps actually work?

Translation carries meaning from one language to another, which requires meaning to be in the sound. The sound of a cry does not carry the reason. A 2023 study by Lockhart-Bouron and colleagues in Communications Psychology (Nature Portfolio) examined 39,201 cry sequences recorded in the homes of 24 babies; across the 676 recordings with a known cause, neither adult listeners nor an algorithm could reliably tell the causes apart. The sound reliably carried who the baby was and how old, not why they were crying.

Our own measurement gave the same result: on the only public cause-labelled dataset (457 recordings from 221 babies), split by baby, identity prediction reached 62.5% (chance 9.1%) while three-class cause prediction stayed at 32.9% (chance 33.3%). When an app says “hungry”, that is either a guess from context or not even a guess. This is why Agubu ranks reasons from context and says when it is unsure. Details: why a cry cannot be read and why babies cry.

How to read a baby translator app's store page

Because the name tells you nothing about what the app does, the store page has to. Five things we checked on every listing on this page, which you can check in a minute before you record your baby:

Rather than take our word for it, apply the same list to Agubu: it quotes no percentage, rejects a silent recording instead of naming a reason for it, and processes everything on the phone.

Which one for whom

Frequently asked questions

Is there an app that translates baby cries?

No. The research shows that the sound of a cry carries the baby's identity and age, not the reason, and our own measurement found the same. Some apps sold under this name classify sound; others are entertainment apps. The most honest approach is to rank reasons from context rather than sound, and to say so when unsure.

Are baby translator apps free?

Most run on weekly or monthly subscriptions: Baby Translator & Cry Stopper was $4.99 a week at the time of checking, BabyLingo $6.59 a week, Bankrot Studio's app $2.99 a week; Nanni AI and AYA list several purchase options. In Agubu, 3 analyses a day, the care log, 8 sounds and the last 7 days of history are free permanently.

Does Baby Translator & Cry Stopper really analyse crying?

No, and its own store description says so. The app records baby babble and plays back a funny quote with a photo, alongside calming sounds and a breathing exercise. It does not try to find out why the baby is crying, and it was last updated in 2019.

Is Nanni AI free?

Partly. The App Store description presents the tracker as free, but the store page listed purchases from $9.99 to $119.99 plus consumable “Hearts” and “Tokens” at the time of checking, while the website says everything is free. We could not confirm the exact free limit from the official pages.

Do baby cry translator apps work?

Not in the sense of translating. Detecting that a baby is crying works; naming the reason from the sound does not. In the 2023 study neither adult listeners nor an algorithm could reliably tell the causes apart across 676 cause-labelled recordings, and our own measurement on 457 recordings from 221 babies stayed at chance level once the data was split by baby. Some translator apps classify the sound anyway; some are entertainment apps by their own description. Ask where the recording goes, too: several of these apps send it to a server.

Which baby translator app is best?

It depends on what you want from it, and none of them can do the thing the name promises. For a free, research-origin app: ChatterBaby, covered in our cry analyzer comparison. For Apple Watch and an all-in-one tracker: Nanni AI. For 48 languages: AYA. For a laugh: Baby Translator & Cry Stopper. If you want the recording to stay on the phone and an honest ranking of possibilities instead of a translation, that is what Agubu is built for, and we say so upfront because it is ours.
