Cry Analyzer alternative: ad-free, on-device, and honest when unsure

Most parents searching for a Cry Analyzer alternative have already tried it: with 5M+ downloads on Google Play and 16 languages including Turkish, it is the most widely used app in the category. The search usually comes down to the same two things: watching ads in the free tier, and not knowing what the percentages from a 5-second clip actually mean. This page first explains what Cry Analyzer does as its store listings describe it, then why people look elsewhere, then where Agubu differs.

In plain words: Agubu is our app. About Cry Analyzer we write only what we read on the App Store, Google Play and cry-analyzer.com on 29 September 2026; ratings come from the iTunes Lookup API. We also say from the start that no app, ours included, can reliably read the reason for a cry from the sound.

Disclosure: we make Agubu. Every fact about a competitor is sourced; ratings come from store data and change over time.

What Cry Analyzer does

Cry Analyzer (CryAnalyzer - baby translator on Google Play) is the iOS and Android app of First Ascent, Japan. It records a 5-second sample of crying and shows percentages for the baby's emotional state or likely reason, such as sleep, milk or discomfort, from the pitch and frequency of the cry. Feedback personalises it and it keeps a simple tracking log (App Store description; cry-analyzer.com). Recommended age 0-6 months, usable up to 2 years.

Its standouts: the largest install base in the category, 5M+ downloads on Google Play; 16 interface languages including Turkish; the developer states collaborative research with Japan's National Center for Child Health and Development (NCCHD). Ratings: US App Store 3.97 (93), Turkish App Store 3.47 (30), Google Play 3.0 (about 4,960). The price model, in the App Store description's own words: “Enjoy free access by watching ads, or subscribe for an ad-free experience”; purchases of $2.99, $3.99 and $11.99 were listed on the US store at the time of checking, and the website offers a free trial. The developer's claim, in its own words: “The accuracy of this APP is over 80%.”

Why people look for an alternative

Only reasons the store listings support:

There are reasons to stay too

The Turkish interface, the large user base and the NCCHD research collaboration the developer states are reasons to stay; we write them as they are. The differences below concern where the sound goes, where the reason comes from and what is left in the free tier.

How Agubu differs

Agubu does the opposite of what Cry Analyzer does with the sound: it uses it not to read the reason but to confirm that a cry is happening. The microphone listens for 8 seconds; the on-device model checks that the sound is a cry and that the recording is usable, and rejects silent or noisy clips. Likely reasons are ranked from context: time since the last feed, time awake, last diaper, age and time of day; your “right / wrong” feedback personalises it over time. There are three confidence tiers, and when it is unsure it says so.

No ads, in the free tier or in Premium. Analysis runs entirely on the device with no internet; audio is never written to disk and is deleted when analysis ends. No account, server or analytics. The free tier is permanent and committed to in our terms: 3 analyses a day with the full result, unlimited care logging (sleep, nursing, bottle, diaper), the last 7 days of history, 8 soothing sounds with a timer, safety content, the Methodology page. Premium unlocks unlimited analyses, 8 more sounds, the mixer, unlimited history and the 30-day doctor report. Turkish and English; iPhone (iOS 15.0 or later) and Android.

We claim no percentage; we measured on our own data that the reason cannot be reliably read from the sound and explain it on the Methodology page. Honest limits: Agubu launched on 31 August 2026 and has no ratings yet; it has 2 languages, not 16; no multi-baby profiles or caregiver sharing. Details: cry analysis.

Other options

ChatterBaby

The free app of UCLA Health's research group; iOS and Android, since 2018. Three reasons (hungry, fussy, pain) and a candid listing. Recordings are stored on a research server under a consent form; English only; no care log or sounds. US App Store 3.94 (1,385), Google Play 3.0 (about 1,590). Details: ChatterBaby alternative.

Cry Translator Baby Assistant (AYA)

48 languages including Turkish, an AI chat helper, sounds, a feeding and diaper tracker and growth tracking in one app; US App Store 4.73 (612), Google Play 4.4 (about 3,730). Recordings are processed on the developer's side, the Android version shows ads, and weekly subscriptions of $5.99 to $8.99 were listed at the time of checking. The developer states “up to 96.36%” with a footnote that it comes from internal tests. Details: Cry Translator Baby Assistant alternative.

BabyLingo

8 languages including Turkish; from 5 to 10 seconds it shows the most likely reason with soothing tips, plus rain, ocean, white noise and lullabies. The developer calls it “a parenting and entertainment support tool”; no method or figure; no care log; $6.59 a week at the time of checking. Turkish App Store 4.12 (95).

Switching

Cry Analyzer keeps a simple log; Agubu has no feature for importing data from other apps, so that log does not carry over. Logging in Agubu starts fresh; the four log types take one tap each and the age-based wake window works from day one. You can use both apps side by side for a while.

What you lose: 16 languages, a large user base and the NCCHD collaboration reference. What you gain: ad-free, on-device analysis, context, confidence tiers and a permanent free tier. Your records stay on the phone; you can delete everything under Settings → Your data. The only thing that leaves the phone is the 30-day doctor-report PDF in Premium.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cry Analyzer free?

According to the App Store description, it is free when you watch ads, and ad-free use needs a subscription. Purchases of $2.99 to $11.99 were listed on the US store at the time of checking, and the website offers a free trial; prices vary by country.

Is Cry Analyzer available in Turkish?

Yes. The App Store language list shows 16 languages including Turkish. Its Turkish App Store rating is 3.47 from 30 ratings.

Does Cry Analyzer work offline?

The store pages and website we read do not say, so we do not know. In Agubu, analysis, logging and sounds all work offline and the audio never leaves the phone.

Is Cry Analyzer over 80% accurate?

That is the developer's own statement; we found no independent verification. The 2023 Communications Psychology study and our own measurement show that the sound of a cry does not reliably carry the reason. How high percentages can arise is explained on our Methodology page.
