ChatterBaby alternative: an option that keeps the recording on your phone

Most parents searching for a ChatterBaby alternative do not dislike the app; they are stuck on two questions: where does my recording go, and is it available in my language? ChatterBaby is built by UCLA Health's research group, is completely free on both stores, has been available since 2018 and has one of the most candid store listings in the category. This page first explains what ChatterBaby does, with sources, then why people look for something else, then where Agubu differs.

In plain words: Agubu is our app. So we describe ChatterBaby not from our point of view but from the store listings as read on 29 September 2026 and from UCLA Health's own articles; ratings come from the iTunes Lookup API. We also say from the start that no app, ours included, can reliably read the reason for a cry from the sound.

Disclosure: we make Agubu. Every fact about a competitor is sourced; ratings come from store data and change over time.

What ChatterBaby does

ChatterBaby records a short clip, compares it with UCLA's cry database and reports whether the baby is crying and, if so, which of three reasons is most likely: hungry, fussy or pain. Recordings are stored on a HIPAA-compliant research server under a consent form; UCLA uses them to study whether vocal patterns predict neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism (App Store description).

Its standouts, sourced: university origin, originally developed for deaf parents (UCLA Health article); no in-app purchases on either store; on the App Store since 15 March 2018 and still updated (v3.1, 25 June 2026); 100K+ downloads on Google Play. Ratings: US App Store 3.94 (1,385), Turkish App Store 3.86 (88), Google Play 3.0 (about 1,590). The developer's claim, in its own words: “correctly identifies roughly 85% of pain cries” and “roughly 90% accurate for catching any baby cries”. The listing also says: “If the ChatterBaby algorithm and your own common sense disagree, always trust your brain.” We have not seen that sentence in any other app in this category.

Why people look for an alternative

We list only reasons the store listings and the developer's own notes support:

Being free is not a reason to leave

We say this as it is: ChatterBaby has no in-app purchases on either store, and its listing states its own limits. Those are good reasons to stay. The differences below are not about price; they are about where the sound goes and where the reason comes from.

How Agubu differs

Agubu differs from ChatterBaby in where the sound goes and where the reason comes from. The microphone listens for 8 seconds; the audio stays in memory, is never written to disk and is deleted when analysis ends. The on-device model only checks that the sound is a cry and that the recording is usable. Likely reasons are ranked from context: time since the last feed, time awake, last diaper, age and time of day. There are three confidence tiers: “most likely”, “probably, but not sure” and “not sure, here are the top three”.

The honesty line: no percentage claim. We measured on our own data that the reason cannot be reliably read from the sound, and we explain it, mistakes included, on the Methodology page. Privacy: no account, server, ads, analytics or crash reports; every record about your baby stays on the phone. The free tier is permanent and committed to in our terms: 3 analyses a day with the full result, unlimited logging, the last 7 days of history, 8 sounds with a timer, safety content. Alongside, what ChatterBaby does not have: sleep, nursing (left/right timer), bottle and diaper logging; age-based wake windows; a 14-day rhythm map; 16 soothing sounds; 10 sourced guide articles. Turkish and English; iPhone (iOS 15.0 or later) and Android.

What Agubu does not have is equally clear: a university study and eight years of history. We launched on 31 August 2026 and have no ratings yet. Details: cry analysis and privacy.

Other options

Nanni AI

Ubenwa's app for iOS, Android and Apple Watch. It returns the most likely reason from a few seconds of audio, with nap prediction, voice-entry logging and a milestone log alongside. The developer says it builds on clinical research with pediatric hospitals; US App Store 4.70 (339), Google Play 3.6 (about 1,170). English only; use of the app feeds Ubenwa's research; the iOS app was last updated on 30 June 2025. In-app purchases from $9.99 to $119.99 were listed at the time of checking. Details: Nanni AI alternative.

Cry Analyzer (First Ascent)

The most widely used app in the category: 5M+ downloads on Google Play, 16 languages including Turkish. It shows percentages from a 5-second recording and uses no context. Free with ads, ad-free with a subscription. Google Play 3.0 (about 4,960), Turkish App Store 3.47 (30). The developer states “over 80%”; there is no independent verification. Details: Cry Analyzer alternative.

AI Baby Cry Analyzer (Gowalk)

iOS only. A full care journal (feeds, sleep, diapers, pumping, medicine, growth), caregiver sharing and PDF/CSV/JSON export; the cry analysis is optional and uploads the clip with consent. The listing describes results as “uncertain possibilities, not measured probabilities”. US App Store 4.6 (150); no Turkish; subscriptions from $3.99 a week at the time of checking.

Switching

There is nothing to carry over from ChatterBaby to Agubu: ChatterBaby keeps no care log, and Agubu has no feature for importing data from other apps. You can also keep both installed; neither blocks the other. Removing recordings you contributed to ChatterBaby's research server is a matter for UCLA's own process, not something we can help with.

What stays free in Agubu: 3 analyses a day with the full result, the four-type log, the last 7 days of history, 8 sounds with a timer, the safety content and the Methodology page. Premium unlocks unlimited analyses, 8 more sounds, the mixer, unlimited history and the 30-day doctor report. Your records stay on the phone; you can delete everything under Settings → Your data. The only thing that leaves the phone is the 30-day doctor-report PDF in Premium.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatterBaby free?

Yes. On 29 September 2026 the App Store page listed no in-app purchases section, and the Google Play listing showed neither an “in-app purchases” nor a “contains ads” badge. It is the only completely free app in this comparison.

Is ChatterBaby available in Turkish?

No. The App Store language list shows English only. The 88 ratings in the Turkish App Store show interest, but the interface is not in Turkish. Agubu is in Turkish and English.

Does ChatterBaby store my recording?

Yes. According to the App Store description, recordings are stored on a HIPAA-compliant research server under a consent form and used in UCLA's neurodevelopmental research. In Agubu the audio is never written to disk and is deleted when analysis ends.

Can I import my ChatterBaby data into Agubu?

There is nothing to import: ChatterBaby keeps no care log. Agubu also has no feature for importing data from other apps; logging starts fresh in Agubu.
